Marion Merrell Dow Inc. unveils a new colitis drug. 
  Marion Merrell Dow Inc. will market a new drug for ulcerative colitis starting in July, the company announced Wednesday.Called Pentasa, the medication comes in a controlled-release capsule that should relieve the often painful diarrhea that accompanies colitis."This is news we're very excited about. It's a new area for us,"Marion spokesman Tom Heapes said.

TRANSPLANT DRUG MAY BE USEFUL IN TREATING COLITIS 
  A drug commonly given to transplant patients offers the first new treatment in 40 years for victims of severe ulcerative colitis and can often spare them removal of their colons, physicians report.A study in today's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine found that cyclosporine was effective in seriously ill patients who did not respond to steroid drugs, the last medicine introduced for severe forms of the disease.

Studies: New drugs help against gout, colitis 
  Two novel drug treatments show promise against gout and colitis, painful conditions that plague millions of people worldwide. Febuxostat, which is awaiting approval from U.S. regulators, would be the first new medicine in four decades for gout, which is becoming more common in this country. Gout has long been associated with rich diets, and afflicted such figures in history as Benjamin Franklin, Henry VIII and Alfred Lord Tennyson. Infliximab, sold under the brand name Remicade can also very effectively treat ulcerative colitis.
P&G seeks expanded use for colitis drug 
  The Procter &Gamble Co. has asked federal regulators to broaden the approved use of its ulcerative colitis drug, Asacol.The Federal Food and Drug Administration has accepted P&G's application, which seeks to have the drug's use expanded to include maintenance therapy for ulcerative colitis, the company said Tuesday.Currently, Asacol Delayed Release in tablet form is approved for use in treating active ulcerative colitis.
