  A drug commonly given to transplant patients offers the first new treatment in 40 years for victims of severe ulcerative colitis, doctors report. They say patients may be spared removal of their colons.A study showed that cyclosporine was effective in seriously ill patients who did not respond to steroid drugs, the last medicine introduced for severe forms of the disease.Ulcerative colitis is a chronic bowel inflammation that results in bloody diarrhea and other symptoms. 

Safety questions plague new drug FDA said to have disregarded warnings 
  In the drug's first eight months on the market, five people who took it died. Several others had bowel surgeries - one underwent colon removal. A total of 49 patients developed ischemic colitis, a potentially life-threatening complication. As a result, the Food and Drug Administration is now re-evaluating the safety of Lotronex, a drug intended to treat women with ulcerative colitis.

  The Food and Drug Administration said Monday that Kabi Pharmacia Inc., Piscataway, N.J., will be required to undertake an extensive campaign to correct misleading promotion and advertising for its ulcerative colitis drug Dipentum.In a consent decree signed by FDA and Kabi, the U.S. District Court in New Jersey entered a permanent injunction against Kabi and Anders Wiklund, its president and chief executive officer, with regard to the marketing of Dipentum.

New drug improves patients with disabling bowel disease 
  A promising new anti-inflammatory drug under development here dramatically improved the condition of patients suffering from a disabling bowel disease, Chicago researchers report."We have good data that zileuton (the new drug) is effective against ulcerative colitis. This is important because patients are not satisfied with the current treatment,"said Dr. James Kesterson, director of the immunosciences program at Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago.
