Ulcerative Colitis is largely a disease of non-smokers. Improvement of symptoms has been seen in patients resuming smoking after having previously given up. The reason for this apparent improvement has been attributed to the nicotine content of the cigarette. Nicotine may be beneficial in patients with Ulcerative colitis because nicotine  increases the adherent surface mucus in the large intestine which is reduced in ulcerative colitis. The mucus acts as a protective barrier to the mucosa which may be damaged by bacteria and breakdown products in the intestine. Nicotine may have an inhibiting effect on the inflammatory response of the body. A recent study was conducted on patients with known left sided colitis using nicotine patches of 5 mg increasing to 15 mg doses (equivalent to 5-15 cigarettes) over 6 days. This was compared to the effects of a placebo. The dose was increased to 25 mg if there was no response after two weeks. An improvement of symptoms was seen in both groups, but the nicotine group showed greater improvement.

While smoking may definitely help in many cases of ulcerative colitis it will invariably help you die sooner due to other serious diseases like cancer and heart diseases. If you have diabetes you can add kidney diseases to that list. So do not under any circumstances resume smoking or take to smoking for controlling ulcerative colitis or for any reason. There are well established drugs and medications that will help you overcome and tackle colitis.

There are also herbal medicines which can very effectively treat colitis & ulcerative colitis. Boswellia is an Ayurvedic  (Indian traditional medicine) herb, used as a natural alternative to drugs. Many studies have found that the effectiveness of Boswellia is similar and even superior to sulfasalazine based prescription drugs. (Source Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulcerative_colitis
